Roman Cursive with Ewan Clayton

Workshop with Ewan Clayton on informal Roman Cursive script

Writing in the ancient roman world included not just the formal painted and carved capital lettering we still employ today but also several forms of informal handwriting: old and new roman cursive. In this class we will look at these informal scripts, studying the handwriting based on capital letters on day 1 and the lower-case forms on day 2. Our aim is to understand their constructive dynamics using the pencil and then to explore them with pens as a basis for creating our own more contemporary and expressive calligraphy.

COST : £ 175

Class size limited to 8 people. 50% Deposit required by March 15th to secure spot.

Roman Capitals in Pen with Christopher Haanes
Mar

to Mar 3

Roman Capitals in Pen with Christopher Haanes

Our letters have origins, and the Roman Capitals are one of the most important points of origin. They are both dignified and authoritarian, solemn and formal, and easily take a lifetime to master.

The skills acquired from practicing these 2000 year old letters are essential to any calligrapher. ‘Disciplined freedom’ is no empty statement when it comes to these letters. Evolving from geometrical Greek skeleton shapes, the Romans introduced the broad edged writing tool at around 100 B.C., possibly influenced by Egyptian scribes that had already used a broad edged reed pen for their hieratic writing. The broad edged brush was often used in writing the Capitals monumentalis, but pen written Roman Capitals have been part of the calligraphic heritage for hundreds of years.

Roman capitals come to life where a sound understanding of geometry and optical adjustment meet movement and gesture.

DATES : Saturday, 2 March, 10:00 to 5:30

Sunday, 3 March, 10:00 to 5:30

COST : £ 220 This class is designed for Beginners to Advanced calligraphers/designers. For beginners, a January or February Roman Skeleton class is required. Discount when registering two or more classes.

That also goes for experienced calligraphers who may not have been able to come to one of our courses - you are certainly welcome to join us with your project - though be advised this is for continuing work or study already in progress and there will be no teaching per se, just comradery.

For anyone who has not been to the studio before, the door is open to you too. You are welcome to “pop-in” to see the space and have an informal chat about any questions you may have. As this would be a short visit over a cup of tea, no payment required.

LETTERS & STORYTELLING: There is a lost medieval tradition of giving letter structure by telling short stories about them. We look at a tenth century monastic manuscript and see what we can learn from this tradition: and we explore the stories that will bring letters alive for us now.
